newby hoping to learn about using cloud servers with jellyfin - bachtothebasics - 2023-12-17

Hi all

I am interested in learning more about operating a server, and would like to be able to access music which is currently stored on my laptop on other devices. Based on my current circumstances, I thought it would probably be best for me to use a cloud provider - I was considering using Digital Ocean, installing jellyfin and uploading my files, and pointing whatever other devices I want to use at that so that I can stream my music from the server.

I am pretty new to using online servers. I tried a tutorial a while ago but would definitely be interested in seeing any walkthroughs, tutorials, or other devices on successfully installing and running jellyfin on such a cloud server. Can anyone point me in a good direction to learn more? I am in the very beginning stages and am unsure if this is what the instructions re e.g. Docker are intended for in the main website's documentation pages, or if I should be looking elsewhere for advice.

Thanks.

I would not recommend starting your server journey with hosting Jellyfin on an external server.
Jellyfin is a _home_ media server, not something that is build to be hosted outside your network. This will require a lot of configuration and security considerations. You can go forward with that but i would generally recommend hosting this at your home.

Okay, thanks. I will try testing it out on a personal computer, then, and see if I can find another project or resource to learn about cloud servers... maybe once I know more about both, I can try this project then if it seems like a good idea at that point.
