Raspberry Pi 4 8GB  vs Mac mini 2014 for a jellyfin server - Veoxer - 2023-12-25

Hello,
So I had my Jellyfin server up and running on a Raspberry Pi 4 8GB and it's was not bad. It did struggle with transcoding which got me thinking maybe I should get a better machine for this. I have an old Mac Mini 2014 that's sitting around and I was wondering if it'll be any better. I installed Ubuntu Server on it and had Jellyfin server running on a docker container (just like I did for Raspberry Pi) and I didn't notice any difference. It struggles too.
So now I wanted to know which one of them is better than the other please and thank you.

neither are a good option, the raspberry pi is already not recommended by being under powered and the mac mini has a 4th gen cpu when 7th is recommended

just follow the hardware selection guide provided by jellyfin to find something https://jellyfin.org/docs/general/administration/hardware-selection

(note the highlighted section where it clearly states SBCs like pi should not be used)

What tmsrxzar said. But if buying hardware is just not an option, at least the Mac Mini has enough CPU power to do CPU transcoding on a very fast preset (but lower quality).

Thank you for your replies. What if I want to buy a new machine and use it as a server that runs Windows and run Jellyfin server on it, what would you recommend please?
I'm thinking of an Intel NUC with an i5 7gen and Intel HD graphics 620, what do you think?

A 7th Gen Intel CPU would do a pretty good job as a jellyfin server.

honestly any mini pc with an intel made after 2019 should be capable, need to decide what all is involved in the setup to make a hardware decision
amount of users, client devices and will they need transcoding, media types being served, only local lan or over internet all play factors on server selection

single user environment where the client is capable of direct play on everything then the server can be a potato
