can anyone log in to my server from their device if they know my computer/host name? - SlickBotswaske - 2023-12-25

So I have recently configured Jellyfin on my computer. However, I am not a very tech-savvy person and don't know anything about networking. Can anyone explain it to me in simple terms how it works?
My main question is can anyone log in to my server from their device if they know my computer/host name?  (I have set up a password as well btw but just want to be sure) Also, do they upload my movies to some cloud or something I don't understand how it is streaming my movies and shows from my computer to my phone?

If you haven't set up your Jellyfin to be Internet accessible (it sounds like you haven't) then only devices on your home network can access it right now. This is not something you can accidentally do.

Jellyfin works in a similar manner to Netflix or Youtube. Specifically the protocols for streaming video. But Jellyfin only streams content you store locally on your computer. You tell Jellyfin where your videos are and Jellyfin displays them in the interface and streams it to your devices.

Thanks for the help mate. So as I understand they don’t upload it to any server. It’s all local, isn’t it?

Most people run their Jellyfin on a computer they own on their home Internet connection. You can get fancy and rent a server in a data center if you have limited upload bandwidth, etc. But I would say that 90+% of users just go everything on a normal PC at home.

Yes, that is my intention to run it from my local computer. It's good that they don't upload my movies anywhere then.
