Unable to select "too low" of quality of video - DestinyGrey - 2023-12-28
Hello,
I've just set up my new Ubuntu server machine, including setup of my new GPU in it (a 1070). To test it out, I tried lowering the quality of video within Jellyfin. However, I quickly found an oddity- when switching quality to 720p, Jellyfin could generally render the video. But switching to 480p would not load at all, and in fact made the Jellyfin player client crash. Only changing the quality back to a higher resolution, or just streaming direct would fix it. Testing it in Edge doesn't crash it (thankfully) but it will pause playback until I change it back to the higher quality options.
My immediate suspicions are that I've set up hardware acceleration wrong, or I'm not understanding something about the quality options. I've gone through the entire Jellyfin NVENC guide for Linux virtualization in setting it up, though mistakes can always happen.
I am running a docker container on Ubuntu Server. Here are the details:
Version: 10.8.13
Operating System: Linux
Architecture: X64
I appreciate any help on this matter, and am willing to provide as much information as possible.

I did follow the instructions there, though I can't help but feel I missed something. I've since disabled hardware acceleration because of the issues I have been facing with it, though now none of my shows will even work with direct playback, which is disconcerting. I think I've done something really stupid or something to muck it all up.

the decision to direct play is a client side setting not a server side one, when disabling it on the server all it does it break things as you found out
the client still reports it is capable of playing certain video and certain audio types to the server, the server then decides what it needs to do. if the client supports both the video and audio of the original format then the server will send the streams as is and the client will direct play the content
most clients have this hardcoded in based on the platform, some auto-detect capabilities but all report to the server

Thanks, I managed to restore functionality. I realized I had forgotten to save the changes of disabling hardware acceleration, so I saved them (pekbac moment). So now I just gotta figure out how to fix the issues of hardware acceleration not happening/working, and then re-enable it.

I wanted to just provide a brief update to this. I'm afraid I've solved in a rather unhelpful way- I deleted everything about how I configured Jellyfin originally, purged every docker image I had of it, and then re-pulled it, starting from fresh. With the current variables set up in the docker-compose and hardware acceleration re-enabled using Nvidia, I can confirm it is now working, and can verify hardware acceleration is happening via nvidia-smi in the terminal.
I know this won't be helpful to people looking back for ideas on what went wrong, and I do apologize, but it is now working correctly. Thank you to the user who helped me.
