Plex is working, can't get Jellyfin to stream - grandpasquarepants - 2024-01-12

Hi everybody. I'm extremely new to all of these so please forgive my ignorance.

I have a small media library on my NAS, split into folders for Movies and TV shows. I've installed both Plex and Jellyfin on a Windows 10 PC and would like to stream media on my Chromecast with Google TV. So far, I've only been experimenting on my local network and not trying anything outside the house.

I've pointed both Plex and Jellyfin to the library on the NAS and they both have no issues seeing the media, finding matches, all that good stuff. The issue comes when I try to play anything. Plex seems to work just fine with whatever I throw at it, while Jellyfin just hangs and doesn't actually play any of the media.

My assumption is that this is a transcoding issue, but I don't know enough to try and troubleshoot this. In Plex, I have the transcoding settings on Automatic. In Jellyfin, I'm not sure what settings to use.

My PC is admittedly pretty underpowered. It's a HP Compaq Pro 6300 with an Intel Core i7-3770 and 32GB RAM. No graphics card at the moment.

Considering that Plex is able to figure out how to stream the media over my network to the Chromecast, I know the PC is technically capable of doing this. But I don't know how to configure Jellyfin to get it going.

Any help would be seriously appreciated as I'd love to switch to Jellyfin if I can get it working!

Thank you!

Follow this guide to setup Windows for transcoding.

https://jellyfin.org/docs/general/administration/hardware-acceleration/intel/#windows-setups

Once you've done that, you would need to select VAAPI in Dashboard > Playback.

Use this table to select the codecs your device supports decoding in the iGPU (Ivy Bridge column)
