Synology transcoding - STmateo - 2024-01-28

I own a Synology DS220+, with Celeron J4025 CPU. That CPU comes with Intel UHD600 graphics, which should be able to transcode without a problem.

I'm not sure what am I doing wrong, but I can only DIRECT STREAM to my PC or Phone. Video plays, but when I choose the lower bitrate, it crashes and tells me that the "this client isn't compatible with the media and the server isn't sending a compatible media format".

My use case is that I work on an oil rig and streaming media from Synology at home. Since the internet speeds are slow, I need to lower the bitrate.

Could you please recommend, if someone else has a setup on Synology, how to set the transcoding settings to be able to watch it on client devices in lower quality.

Thank you

Current transcoding settings:
Hardware acceleration - Quicksync
Enable hardware decoding for - All selected
Prefer OS native DXVA or VA-API hardware decoders - Not selected
Enable hardware encoding  - Yes
Enable Intel Low-Power H.264 hardware encoder - No
Enable Intel Low-Power HEVC hardware encoder - No
Allow encoding in HEVC format - No
Enable VPP Tone mapping - No
Enable Tone mapping - No

I turned off most of them because I don't know what they do, and such options may cause the issues...

Can you share the ffmpeg log associated with this attempted transcode?

Hi sir,
I'm sorry, but I don't know how to extract ffmpeg log. If you could tell me where to find it I'll send it.

Meanwhile, I played with settings and now it works. Here are the settings:

Current transcoding settings:
Hardware acceleration - Quicksync
Enable hardware decoding for - All selected, except AV1
Prefer OS native DXVA or VA-API hardware decoders - YES
Enable hardware encoding - Yes
Enable Intel Low-Power H.264 hardware encoder - No
Enable Intel Low-Power HEVC hardware encoder - No
Allow encoding in HEVC format - YES
Enable VPP Tone mapping - YES
Enable Tone mapping - YES
Allow subtitle extraction on the fly - YES

You can access your ffmpeg logs in the dashboard. Near the bottom in the left panel.
