how good will this mini pc be at jellyfin? - megmer - 2023-07-21

i am looking at an intel NUC7i5BNK (i5-7260U) on ebay for under 100 and i wanna know how many transcodes/regular video streams i could run at a time on it, as well as if it supports HDR (im gonna be using kodi on it). also, how does one tell how good a cpu is? i looked on the intel naming guide and found nothing conclusive, looked on benchmarks and didnt understand it, and i just dont understand how to get the info "will this transcode good?". if that nuc isnt a good, what else can i get for 100-150 bucks that can run enough for a couple streams at a time, as well as all the *arrs, pi hole, and other server stuff i think looks neat

It's kind of old. But it should be able to transcode 4-6 1080p HEVC streams. Possibly a few more. No AV1 support. 8th gen Intel and newer is the typical suggestion due to QSV performing better, from what I'm told.

As for direct play streams, you are probably limited by the disk or network performance and not the CPU/GPU.

If your library is 1080P and using H264 or HEVC/H265, 4-6 transcodes is sufficient, and the price is right, you could do far worse than that NUC.
