8700G APU - andrewdestructo - 2024-02-05 Hi, I'm new to this and just trying to find the best options for making a Jellyfin server. The main reasons I'm interested in the 8700G: 1. You don't need a GPU giving you more options in what cases you use. 2. It has AV1 encoding/decoding. I'm not planning on buying anything in the immediate future just curious about the hardware and wondering if anyone thinks it's viable. Thanks in advance! RE: 8700G APU - mikesulsenti - 2024-02-05 It'll work just fine But an Intel 12th/13th gen CPU with an iGPU can also do AV1 decode at least, and still has supports for MPEG-2 HW decoding. Granted you'll be limiting yourself to a dead-end platform. I don't see AV1 encoding being useful for a while since anything that would play AV1 would just direct play/stream the video. RE: 8700G APU - TheDreadPirate - 2024-02-05 If you plan on running Jellyfin on Windows it should be ok. AMD's encoding drivers on Windows are much better. The unknown is the quality for that CPU/iGPU. Historically, AMD has lagged behind Nvidia and Intel by a lot. Your other option is Intel's Meteor Lake laptop CPUs. Which also has AV1 encoding. Intel has always had the better quality encoder. RE: 8700G APU - nyanmisaka - 2024-02-05 This is doable. The 8700G and Radeon RX 7000 series share the same VCN encoder. But it's not perfect because there's a known hardware issue that prevents it from properly encoding AV1 1080p video. If I had to choose, I would wait for the next generation. https://trac.ffmpeg.org/ticket/10266 https://gitlab.freedesktop.org/mesa/mesa/-/issues/9185#note_1954937 |
