Syncplay / watch together Android TV - someswede - 2024-03-04

Hey!

I Love your software, and the only reason i haven't ditched plex is because jellyfin sadly doesn't support watch together/syncplay Pouting-face Confounded-face Weary-face Face-with-head-bandage

I watch almost all series together with different friends and we watch on android TV's (most of us).

It's been some years now since it was discussed, do we have any update about this yet? ETA?

Appreciate it! <3  Kiss-mark

From what I've gathered from past posts in this forum, the main reason the current implementation of syncplay within Jellyfin is broken is because the main developer behind it disappeared.
The remaining developers don't either understand the left-over code, or they don't have enough time to learn it or fix it.

if this is true, i really really really hope they can make some time to add/fix this! It's such amazing software, only missing "Watch together" on androidTV-app and i'll use this software 24/7 Smiling-face) Praying!

Syncplay is weird. Some people have zero issues with syncplay. Others can't get it to work well. And it is only implemented in clients that are web wrappers (Android, iOS, WebOS?). All of the native clients like Swiftfin, Android TV, and Roku likely won't have syncplay added to them any time soon.

And, yes, the dev that added it disappeared shortly after adding it.

The SyncPlay API is a bit over engineered and some of its features are finicky, for example it heavily relies on a WebSocket connection but we don't have a way to reconnect when the socket fails due to network issues.
Support for SyncPlay is on the ATV roadmap though.
