New to Jellyfin and need help - dogfarts - 2024-03-10

Hi,
Please treat me like I am 10 years old and not a computer science major. :-)
I am interested in installing Jellyfin on macOS 14.3.1 so I can play my ripped music on iOS 14.7 via internet via mobile when away from home. I have a perfectly fine Mac M1 that I use for other purposes like browsing, email, editing images, etc. When I am not home, it can be a server as it is not turned off. Files are on external SSD.
- However, will Jellyfin play the ALAC files that most of my rips are? I am OK if it converts them on the fly to AAC 256. Actually, if that is what it does as a user chosen setting, I would pick it. But the source files are mainly ALAC, then some AAC and a few MP3s. (Hopefully it does not convert MP3 to AAC.)
- The other issue I have run into is that, the install — as simple as it may look to you — is not for non computer programming types.
Is there a Jellyfin installer like other macOS installers? Right now, it is too complex and I am looking for one that matches the Mac user experience of installation of programs. Click, approve, maybe a drag and drop, launch. Like Firefox, for example.
- Also, I will be accessing my music file that Apple Music uses to play my music from. Will Jellyfin need me to change that organization in any way? If so, that would be a deal breaker.
Yes, I know Apple Music provides streaming of my files (actually AAC versions on their servers) via Music Sync Library while I am using Apple Music and subscribing and, when I am no longer paying for streaming, iTunes Match (also AAC versions from Apple) for $25 a year. But I am looking at a way to share my library to me when not on my local network that is free. Preplanning for when Apple raises prices for Apple Music subscription, inevitably.
Thank you for your help and for treating me with respect and like I am a kid in regards to an install that might seem simple to computer programmers but is not for me.

Don't be afraid to experiment and find out.

Codec support is client dependent. As long as you install the Apple Silicon version of ffmpeg it will transcodes ALAC to AAC if your client doesn't support ALAC.

ffmpeg instructions are at the bottom of our MacOS install docs.

The bigger problem is I cannot install it. Too complex and confusing install for non IT type. Need Mac like, simple installer for all the parts.
