Best Low Power Device for Running a Jellyfin Server? - Galahad - 2024-03-11

Hello all, I just started my selfhosting adventure today. I used to use Air Video HD way back when it was relevant. I still use it on occasion, but I'm finding myself using it more now that every streaming service is cracking down on password sharing, increasing prices, and taking away features. Look's like I'm headed back to the [place we don't talk about - TDP], therefore I want to expand and improve my selfhosting capabilities. I currently have a Raspberry Pi 4, and I hear that they're not the greatest when using to run a Jellyfin server, so I'm looking at getting some small low powered device to have running constantly that can stream to a couple devices without any hiccup's. I found this on amazon and I think it looks okay, but I wanted to get some opinions from other people who have had more experience using Jellyfin.

A SFF PC with an Intel N100 is probably your best performance per watt option. Running Debian or Ubuntu.

x86 platform: Intel N100 NUC boxes (QuickSync Video).

arm64 platform: Rockchip RK3588 based SBC, such as Orange Pi 5 (RKMPP / Media Process platform).

Looks like what I shared from Amazon is an Intel N100 processor. Do I have to run Ubuntu or Debian? I have a little Ubuntu experience, but would running windows on it and then the windows server client be fine enough? What’s the benefits of using Ubuntu over Windows?

i am very satisfied with my n100 appliance
i'm running it virtualized on proxmox and can even use the ressources for other stuff, too, if needed

For low power/performance devices, Windows is just too bloated.  I used to run Jellyfin on an older J4205 Intel Atom and when I switched from Windows to Linux for running my server it was a day and night difference.

Everyone keeps forgetting laptops. Plenty of old/used laptops to be had on the cheap.
