Lenovo T470s: 4K Video Transcoding & Invisible DLNA Server on TV - WP3924735493467 - 2024-03-14

Hi everyone,

I'm dealing with two challenges on my setup, which includes a Lenovo T470s laptop with Intel HD 620 graphics running Windows 10, streaming to a CU7192 TV via Jellyfin version 10.8.13:

  1. Excessive Transcoding for 4K Video: When streaming a 4K video file (5GB) from my laptop, it automatically starts transcoding, pushing my CPU to its limits. This seems unnecessary since the same file plays perfectly from a USB drive on my TV. How can I enable direct streaming without this heavy transcoding?
  2. DLNA Server Not Showing on TV: Despite being able to send videos to my TV, the Jellyfin DLNA server doesn't show up in my TV's media browser. I'm puzzled about how to make the server visible on my CU7192 TV.

Would greatly appreciate any tips or guidance on bypassing unnecessary transcoding and troubleshooting the DLNA server visibility issue. Thanks in advance for your help!

Transcoding is client dependent. Even if hardware in your TV supports it, if the player you are using doesn't then it will transcode.

What client are you using on the TV that is transcoding 4K?

DLNA should be turned on by default. In your Windows firewall, did you allow jellyfin.exe as a whole? Or just port 8096? DLNA is on port 1900.

I'm using the native player from Samsung - just clicking in Jellyfin "play on DLNA" "play on TV" and it instantly starts. I'll also try to access the internet browser on the TV and launch the 4K with Jellyfin's web player - it could fix my problem.

Regarding the firewall - I think it's a matter of the router, and I'll be investigating the topic. Interestingly, I can't see not only this one but also other Jellyfin alternatives or DLNA services in the Samsung media.

Thank you for pointing this out.

The router has no bearing on DLNA since DLNA is LAN only. The only consideration is the HOST firewall in Windows. Ports 1900 (UDP) and port 7359 (UDP) need to be opened in Windows. Or you can straight up allow jellyfin.exe in your firewall, if it isn't already. Also make sure that the NIC network type is set to private.
