Hardware queries - jozhlogg - 2024-04-14

So, I'm looking at setting up a Jellyfin server soon using hardware from my old PC. That's currently a i3-9100f and an AMD RX580 8GB. I've seen that I can trade in both my CPU and GPU for an i5-9600k and was wondering which would be the better bet for jellyfin? Do I need more CPU power or is a dGPU worth having? My other thoughts also was that just the CPU would use less power than having the GPU installed. Any thoughts?

Avoid this. AMD encoders this gen has very bad quality and you probably won't like it.

It depends. If you are doing HDR->SDR tone mapping a lot, then you may consider a dGPU as the iGPUs may have performance issues on 4K videos. If you don't, get a modern CPU with iGPU will be good enough.

Great, thanks. Looks like it's time to retire the 580 now!
