CLASSICAL MUSIC ISSUE: use "sort artist" or "artist ID" instead of "artists" - Harold Barrel - 2024-04-21

I think that the Jellyfin experience with classical music could be greatly improved with something relatively simple.

PROBLEM DESCRIPTION

Let's take an example: Пётр Ильич Чайковский (Piotr Ilitch Tchaïkovski).
If you go his MusicBrainz page, there's a list of releases. You can notice that the "Artist" field of each release can vary:
  • Пётр Ильич Чайковский
  • Tchaikovsky
  • Tchaikovski
  • Peter Tchaikovsky
  • Tchaïkovsky
  • P. Tchaikovsky
  • Tschaikowsky
  • Чайковский
  • ... and so on ...
This is how our the same artist is spelled across different releases.
And while MusicBrainz groups all releases by the actual artist name (Пётр Ильич Чайковский), Jellyfin rather uses the "artists" field from the release!
This means that you can have 10 different releases whose composer is the same, but Jellyfin shows them as from separate artists!
The consequence is a terrible mess: if you have a classical music library, and go to the "Artists" tab, you know what I'm talking about.

PROPOSED SOLUTION

Jellyfin should be able to group releases by the same artist, even if spelled differently in each release.
A simple solution I see is using the "Artist Sort Order" field from MusicBrainz, which is always the same and doesn't depend on the specific release spelling.
It should be also possible to group releases by the MusicBrainz artist ID.
