Hardware for a server - himicz - 2023-08-08
Hi! So I'm planning on upgrading my server because my previous died and I needed to upgrade it anyways, I'm planning to put it all in a Cooler Master NR200, I wanted to build an ITX system.
My previous server had a Ryzen 5 1600 and it was decent most of my movies on jellyfin are in 1080 x265 but maybe in the future I'll move to 4K.
So I can't decide what platform to pick for the new build, I'm much more familiar with AMD and prefer it, my gaming pc is AMD. I've heard Intel is better in terms of transcoding so the question is should I go for something like a Ryzen 5 4600G or a Intel I5-12400F and also is any budget ITX motherboard fine or should I go for more of a gaming mobo with usb c and more ports on the back?

100% go with Intel. Intel's QSV is several generations ahead of AMD in terms of quality per bit rate and driver support in Linux is better with Intel.
Gaming motherboards have a lot of extra and frills you probably don't need. Just get whatever board, from a reputable brand, that has the SATA or USB ports and connectors you need.

Thank you for the answer! I'll probably end up going with Intel then, will a I5-12400F be good for Jellyfin, Radarr and all the other Arrs, Minecraft server, websites and a couple of other Docker containers or some other cpu?

Do not get an "F" SKU. Those do not have an iGPU, which is essential for transcoding. If you have all that stuff running on the same server, perhaps the extra couple extra cores in the 12700 would be better. And 32GB of RAM is probably a good idea.

Yes this is going to be fine, don't forget 32 GB of ram.
