Will jellyfin 10.9.3 server work on Windows 8.1 - Bryan - 2024-05-31

I don't want to upgrade my server OS to windows 10, 8.1 is working perfect, I only use it to file serve and run the Jellyfin server.
I wouldn't even upgrade my jellyfin server but when I log into the jellyfin app on my amazon firestick app I get a warning

I don't want to update the jellyfin app on my firesticks and firetv. I have 4 TV's with firesticks and one Fire TV, and my server OS is windows 8.1, everything works great as is.

Do I have to update the app?
If so, will the jellyfin server 10.9.3 work on windows 8.1?

You can make it work with workarounds. Specifically the tray app uses a newer version of .NET that your OS probably can't support, but read this thread for the workaround.

Thank you for the response, I don't want to mess around and have it not work, I'd rather just install windows 10 than do a workaround.

That still leaves me with my first question, do I have to upgrade?
The app works on the firesticks and fireTV, the server works with windows 8.1, will I be forced to upgrade the app or can I just keep using what I have?

Whether you stick with an EOL version of Windows and use the tray app workaround or upgrade to a soon to be EOL version of Windows, you WILL need to upgrade the jellyfin server version if you have the latest Android TV app.

What I was asking is will I be forced to upgrade the app? But now I was thinking, even if I kept everything as it is, there will be a time I get a new firestick or new firetv which will get the latest version of the app, which won't connect to my old server software, so I have to upgrade to windows 10 and get the latest JF server.
I'm so sick of upgrades... I started with Windows 95 and every time I would get everything the way I want, all the right programs, settings and really enjoying my PC, I need to install a new OS and start over..

With Jellyfin's current management, things like a forced update will most likely not happen. And if in the future the people behind Jellyfin changes, or have a change of heart, and force updates on things, the code is currently available (open source). You and anoybody else will be able to fork the Jellyfin project and its clients, and keep them at a set version until the end of time. Or until the old versions no longer work on new hardware/software.

The only forced updates Jellyfin deals with are those out of the Jellyfin team's power to do anything about. Like if your device or OS forces auto-updates.

The reason you're being prompted to update the server is because future releases of the client (if not currently) will have features that only work with the newer server. So if you update the client then, you won't be able to use it until the server gets updated.

Also, this is one of the reasons Docker containers are great. As long as your system supports Docker, you can run any Jellyfin server version for as long as you want. All the server releases are hosted on the Docker repo, and starting with v10.9 onwards, the Github container repo too. If I wanted to, I could spin up a v10.7.0 server right now. All the code and dependencies for it are included with the image and kept separated from the rest of the host OS.

Yeah it sucks, but that's just how thing go in this world. Big tech companies like Apple or Microsoft hire hundreds of thousands of people as employees. They most likely can't justify paying all those people to maintain a product to be the same forever. There's an incentive there for employees to keep building new things so that the companies can justify having so many employees. Even if it comes at the detrement of older software being phased out.

Though it's not all bad. You can't just keep maintaining the same thing forever. You eventually have to change or grow, or you'll become obsolete. Not because your product turned to trash, but because some new product came out with new features that better served new demands of the users.

I had some parts laying around so I built a another desktop with windows 10 to use as a Jellyfin server, but I can't seem to find the download or instruction for the latest version of Jellyfin server, can you point me where to go for those?

The download for Jellyfin's Windows installer is found here: https://repo.jellyfin.org/?path=/server/windows/latest-stable/amd64

The installer is the one with ".exe" for the file extension. The zip file version is the portable version.

Before you upgrade you should consider:
- Collections are broken if you have 2K and 4K films
- Large collections are always broken because of an endless list of studios before a single film shows up
- The player gets you funny-coloured ratings where you don't want them
- The search is better than with 10.8 but slower and still broken
- The default version on phones is 4K

If I had known these issues before I'd have stuck with 10.8.13 for the time being.

- Interval chapter images are not created for new films if you don't turn this function on manually

Thank you for the information and tip, I'll avoid the latest version for now. 

I found an archive here but I couldn't find 10.8.13, the latest version on that page is 10.8.9,
