Autostart not working after update (Windows) - ivan - 2024-06-11

Hi,

I'm running JellyFin on Windows.
I have recently updated to the latest version of JellyFin which is v10.9.6. Previously it was on v10.8.x (I can't remember the specific version).

But I've noticed that the application is no longer running automatically on Windows Start. I've restarted the machine a few times.

I can run it manually from the desktop shortcut. And then it works fine. Right-clicking on the systray icon shows that the Autostart option is enabled (though it's obviously not working).

I checked msconfig and there's an entry there for Jellyfin. It mentions "C:\Program Files \Jellyfin\Server\Jellyfin.Windows.Tray.exe" (see screenshot attached).

I checked the location of the executable file via the desktop shortcut and it appears to be at "C:\Program Files\Jellyfin\Server\jellyfin-windows-tray\Jellyfin.Windows.Tray.exe"

These are two different paths!
So I'm assuming something changed in the latest version (??).

Now, how can fix the Autostart entry?

What version of Windows is this?

Windows Server 2008

I'm not aware of a way to edit those msconfig startups. You may have to disable it and use the startup shortcut folder method for starting apps.

But did the path change in the latest version?

If yes, then do you know if others are having this issue as well?

There's some suggestions here on how to edit the msconfig startup entries in Regedit.

I'll do my testing and I'll come back.

I am also having this issue after the 10.9.X updates, I think I noticed from 10.9.3 onwards

Running AMD64 Jellyfin 10.9.6 on Windows 11

There's no need for Regedit.

All I had to do is:

  1. Run JF from desktop shortcut and wait a little bit until it's actually running
  2. Right-click on JF icon in the systray, and do the following:
  • Disable Autostart
  • Stop the server
  • Exit

Then, do the following:
  1. Run JF from desktop shortcut again and wait a little bit until it's actually running
  2. Right-click on JF icon in the systray and do the following:
  • Enable Autostart
  • Exit

Restart the machine. See if it's running automatically now.

I noticed the msconfig entry was updated automatically and points to the correct executable path.

I had the same issue in Windows 11 after updating this week from several versions back. I tried the exact instructions above (disable autostart, stop server, exit, resetup autostart) but it did not work. I then looked in the Startup apps settings and noticed that Jellyfin was listed but disabled. I did not disable it, but it was indeed disable. I enabled it and everything works again. Odd...
