No Dolby Digital Audio Passthrough - akrausz - 2024-06-14

Hello all. Very impressed with Jellyfin so far.

Running 10.9.6 on Asustor NAS, installed with Docker. Using Fire TV Stick 4K Max client, Jellyfin changes the Dolby Digital audio and sends PCM to my receiver. Jellyfin does not change DTS, sends it to the receiver untouched. Kodi sends Dolby Digital untouched.

Can Jellyfin pass through Dolby Digital untouched to the receiver? If so, will include a log.

In the Android TV client there is a setting regarding pass-through. On the Jellyfin home screen click on the gear in the top right, then playback. About 2/3s of the way down are the dolby/dts pass-through settings. What are they currently set to.

Also, what kind of ARC does your TV support?

Fire TV stick client audio settings-
Audio output: Direct
Bitstream Dolby Digital audio: checked
Bitstream DTS audio: checked

The stick is plugged into the receiver. These specs say TV has ARC, not sure version.

Looks like this might be a behavior caused by Android/FireOS?

Thanks. I read through that and it was nice to get a definition of what the settings "Best Available" vs "Dolby Digital +" do on the Fire TV stick. So when I change the Fire TV stick to "Dolby Digital +", then it correctly passes DD+ to the receiver. Unfortunately, it sends everything to the receiver as DD+, even my stereo music.

So, the Fire TV stick setting "Best Available":
- converts DD/DD+ to PCM
- does not convert DTS
- does not convert PCM

Fire TV stick setting "Dolby Digital +":
- converts PCM to DD+
- does not convert DD/DD+
- does not convert DTS

With Kodi and the Fire TV stick setting "Best Available", none of the above are converted...which is what I am after.

Anyone else with any thoughts on seamless audio pass-through with Fire TV stick?

When you say that it converts PCM to DD+:

Is jellyfin actually transcoding your audio? Play a stereo file and post the ffmepg logs, if that's the case

or

Is your AVR virtually mixing it? For example on my AVR, I have movie, music, game, and pure as options. The AVR will mix PCM stereo to virtual surround sound depending on what setting I have, so it looks like it's DD+. I have to select the pure mode setting to play as stereo. In this case, jellyfin does nothing to the audio, the AVR does the mixing, so there will not be any ffmpeg logs.

Seems I should have paid closer attention to Fire TV Stick's lack of ability to pass DD 5.1 or PCM audio untouched to the receiver. It appears that is where my problem is. Thanks.

Most of my audio is being passed via LPCM, which is not ideal. If I use the external app "Just Player" on my shield pro, the correct audio is passed through (dts, truhd, Atmos, etc). I wonder if the playback rewrite will fix this.
