Wan Movie Streaming, fraction of available. - Jellyfinit - 2024-06-16
Alright, This might be an odd problem. I'm hosting my server on windows 10 bare metal. I'm running it from behind Torguard with a dedicated IP address and port forwarding. When running a speed test while connected to the VPN I get anywhere from 80mbps to 120mbps. But when I try to stream movies while not connected to my network I'm limited to 1.5-2mbps with short bursts between 4-8. My goal is to let people stream movies at 10mbps and the connect should be able to handle quite a few of those at any given time, but as of right now, all I can get is 1.5. Does anyone have any idea what might be holding me back?

Running a speed test is not the same thing as serving content with Jellyfin. Generally the kind of VPN that users here run behind is a OpenVPN or Wireguard based VPN. Usually running on a VPS.
I don't recall anyone having luck running Jellyfin behind a privacy focused VPN.

So I'm connected using Wireguard through the torguard app. I get by far the best speeds using this connection type. It's worth noting that I'm only using a VPN because I have Tmobile 5g home internet because it's the only service I can get here and Tmobile home internet doesn't have (can't have) port forwarding. So a VPN with a dedicated IP address and port forwarding is the only way I've found around it. I would use cloudflare's reverse proxy as I'm sure they would have great speeds but I'm pretty sure a reverse proxy wouldn't also support all torrent communication as torrenting is on completely random ports. So once again if anyone has any idea why I can barely crack 2mbps, please let me know. I don't have a global limmiter set on Jellyfin or anything like that.
And maybe I should have brought up earlier, with my VPN I have a static IP and port forwarding. There's really no reason why I should be held back.

So, I know I didn't write the best title for this but it's still driving me crazy. I'm using Torguard VPN, connected with the wireguard protocol. All speed online speed tests show my upload at 80mpbs to 130mbps, but I can't stream over 3mbps, if that. Some times it will start off strong for a few seconds and then drop back down. All I'm trying to stream at is 10mbps. I should be able to handle a few streams with my current connections. It's like Jellyfin it's self just flips me off for fun.

You said you made a speedtest ... did you look at the Download speed or the Upload speed? Because i doubt that your mobile connection will have something like 120mbit Upload speed. And the upload speed is whats relevant here for hosting media to other external devices, you _upload_ media and other devices _download_ this media.

It's Tmobile 5G home internet. I have a $400 directional antenna on my roof where I have line of site to the towers. I'm also using their best router. Sadly, the service does not support port forwarding and it's the best internet I can get at my house. My only way around this is with Torguard VPN with a static IP address and port forwarding.
While I'm currently not getting my top speeds, here's a screen shot with me connected to my VPN:

So... I have the speed. This is the fastest connection I've ever had in my life. Just a damn shame I need to use a VPN to get something as basic as port forwarding. But regardless, it should work just fine.

OK but that already shows that your max upload is 80mbit so that will already be the limiting factor and i dont think OTA connections are _that_ stable.

There's also the round trip time. When you do the speed test it is using a local to the exit node speedtest server. But for your jellyfin data it has a much longer round trip time since it has to go to wherever the exit node is before coming back to you.
If you have the option to select your exit node, pick one closer to you and see how it goes.
