Syncplay - darin - 2024-06-17

Hi all,

Was hoping to get an idea on the status of syncplay for client development. I foolishly jumped ship from Plex to this platform after seeing Syncplay was an option without doing enough research. Unfortunately for me, a lack of Syncplay across all client devices is a deal breaker as it's one of the core reasons my media server is exposed.

Is there a roadmap or anything? I see comments that are more than a year old saying it should be coming. Clearly I understand the volume of effort and the challenges in FOSS, so I understand if the answer is "never" or "it will be released when it is released" but I thought I'd ask after a quick comb of the internet and forum.

BTW everything else is running great on TrueNAS Scale, including NVENC transcoding being passed down to the host from the container! I really hope Syncplay will get some legs as I would like nothing more than to leave Plex behind.

The person originally behind syncplay vanished, leaving a lot of the other developers needing to learn how his code worked since that original developer was the main person working on it. This has lead to syncplay slowly decaying over time.

Syncplay can work fine, but there may be a growing amount of bugs over time due to that.

There has been work started to fix it (or add more to it), but I can't really tell you how long of a wait it will be for things that you expect out of it. The current developers already have their hands full with other features/bugs that they want/need to handle.

That is unfortunate, indeed. Thanks for a realistic and prompt answer! If anyone has any recommendations on solutions for group experience with Jellyfin through plugins or other methods, let me know, otherwise I'll trudge back to Plex...
