Am I crazy, or didn't there used to be an option to choose language or subtitle track before you start playing?
If not, is this on the roadmap?

I was being a smartass, I'm sorry. Not familiar enough with the Android TV client to provide an informed answer. Several other clients offer this functionally, however.
