Playback Error: Fatal Player Error - i3laine - 2024-06-20

Hello,

I'm new to jellyfin as well as the entire media server scene. This is my first attempt at setting one up. I've had my server running for several days and had no issues whatsoever; until I added several titles recently and started getting this message when attempting to play some of them.

I have searched and I found this post, which may be related:

https://forum.jellyfin.org/t-psa-nvidia-drivers-hevc-transcoding?highlight=psa

I don't understand anything beyond the OP saying that they had to roll back their driver. I also don't know if that still applies because a new version of jellyfin and a new nvidia driver have both been released.

These are video details from one of the files that won't play:

For my setup, I've got the following:

MSI Mag Torpedo EK X
Intel 13700K, stock, no OC
OS SSD- Hynix P41 2tb
Storage Drive- Toshiba MG08ACA16TE 16tb 7200RPM 512e
32GB G.skill Trident Z 7200mt/s DDR5 RAM
Gigabyte RTX 4090 AERO OC
Windows 11 Pro 23H2 Build 22631.3737
Jellyfin 10.9.6 via the .exe download

Unlike when a video plays successfully, when the video fails to load, it doesn't create a log.

Here's a screen shot of all my playback settings:

Any advice or guidance would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you,
Blaine

Can you share your full jellyfin log and any ffmpeg logs?

Here is the most recent log:

Your system is not using Jellyfin's custom FFmpeg. It's using the vanilla FFmpeg, which is likely the cause. You must have installed it for something else. You can uninstall it or remove it from your environmental variables system path.

Ugh. I'm sorry, I tried to install the vanilla version, but I didn't realize that it actually completed. Let me wipe and reinstall, then I'll post some of the logs with the jellyfin version

For some reason, pastebin flagged this log as offensive, so here's a link to a txt file with the log:

And here's the latest FFmpeg log:

Use this guide to reinstall your drivers. Don't skip the part about wiping the old ones out first. I don't think that's the issue, but it's worth a try.

RE: Playback Error: Fatal Player Error - i3laine - 2024-06-20

I actually did that right before I did a clean install of jellyfin. I was in the process of doing it when you commented that I was using the wrong version of FFmpeg. I used DDU in safe mode to remove the driver that was installed at the time, and disabled system updates of the gpu driver, and then I rebooted, installed driver 555.99, and then did a wipe and clean install of jellyfin. Then I posted the 2 new logs that I generated while installing jellyfin, and then from playing one of the videos that work. If I try to play one of the videos that gives the error message, it will show in "activity" that video was watched, but it doesn't create any kind of log or new FFmpeg.

How is your library set up and what clients are you playing on? Also, tonemapping should be enabled. What's a file that's not playing that's on your server log?

RE: Playback Error: Fatal Player Error - i3laine - 2024-06-20

I understand you're saying tonemapping should be enabled in general, just as a best practice, so I enabled it, and just for science tried to see if it fixed the issue, but it did not.

My library is set up on a 16tb toshiba drive. It has 4 Main folders: Audio (empty for now), DLs (where all my downloads go before they're put in the proper location), software (all compressed install files for games), and Video.  I have the jellyfin pointed at 4 folders inside my main Video folder; Movies, Shows, Kids Movies, Kids Shows. Movie files are given their own folder, series are given a main folder, and then each season gets a folder inside the series main folder.

I watch on the server pc itself, and then 2 android phones (galaxy s22 ultra and a pixel 7 pro), and lastly 2 fire tablets all with jellyfin downloaded from the google play store. None of the devices can play these specific files.

Here's a look at some of the file details:

None of files generate a log or FFmpeg or anything. Other than the error message, the only thing I can look at to verify I attempted to play it is in "activity" and even then it shows up as normal, like this:
