Can't find the server download for Windows 10 - Bryan - 2024-06-26

When I set up Jellyfin on my Windows 8.1 machine, it was easy, I was able to find and download the server, install it, installed the app on all the TV's, and that was it. Now, I get a warning that I need to upgrade my JF server, but it won't work on Windows 8.1 so I updated my server PC to Windows 10 but now I can't find where to download the latest server, BUT, I was also told by someone in a different discussion that I don't want the latest, it's unstable,
so, what I am looking for is the latest stable version and any instructions on how to set it up.

See here: https://repo.jellyfin.org/?path=/server/windows/latest-stable/amd64

The latest version should be stable. But when in doubt, create a backup just in case.

Thank you for responding. I've been to that page, but don't know what one to download, or do I need both? I assume they are both for Windows, one is for an AMD CPU and the other is for Intel?
I tried the jellyfin_10.9.7_windows-x64.exe file on windows 10 but couldn't get it to work. I thought maybe my windows install was bad so I formatted and installed windows 10 again but before I install JF Server I want to make sure I'm using the right file.

I have an Intel CPU.
Jellyfin Version: 10.8.8
Operating System: Windows 8.1
Architecture: X64
Can I upgrade that server to something that will work with the new app?

I use the server to serve 4 Amazon firesticks, one FireTV and a couple of phones with the JF app.
I'd like to just keep using the server I'm using now on windows 8.1, it's been working fine for over 5 years and upgrading my jellyfin server on that PC would be easier than setting up a new PC with Windows 10 or 11 and starting all over. The problem is, when I'm in the downloads for jellyfin, there is no documentation on requirements, like what version of windows will it run on, what version of the app will work with it. All I know is my server is giving me a warning that the new app will not work on my server so I need to upgrade and I thought I read that the new server will not work on windows 8.1.

Can up upgrade that server to something that will work with the new app?
If I have to upgrade windows, should I upgrade to Windows 10 or 11?
If I have to upgrade, what file do I need for windows 10/11?  jellyfin_10.9.7-amd64.zip or jellyfin_10.9.7_windows-x64.exe?

You have the correct file. Currently, both Windows 10 & 11 support the latest Jellyfin release.

Just to elaborate on a couple of points in your post:

1. Should I keep running a computer with Windows 8.1
-No.
  • Windows 8.1 went into End of Life(EOL) on 1/10/23. Meaning that Microsoft is no longer supporting that product, any security exploits found will not be patched by Microsoft.
  • Third-party applications will or have already dropped support for this OS.
2. What is the difference between the two files, and which one do I need?
  • The exe is a standard installable executable file that will run you through all the prompts to install Jellyfin. Jellyfin will automatically start with a Windows tray program. – You should use this one
  • The zip file is a portable installation. You unzip it to any location and then manually run the program exe through a command prompt or set it up a service.
  • Both installation methods will work with either Intel or AMD.
3. If I have to upgrade to Windows, should I upgrade to Windows 10 or 11
  • Window 10 EOL is Oct 2025, so definitely go with Windows 11*

*Note Windows 11 has some hardware requirements that your PC might not meet, which can be bypassed by using Rufus to create your installation media.
