Nvidia Shield subtitle management - Marco Coli - 2024-06-30

Hello all,

I have recently installed Jellyfin on my linux server, parallel to Plex, with the final goal to replace it.

All ok on my LG OLED tv, on my Samsung Phone, on the web client, but I have problems on two Nvidia Shield device.

On both of them I noticed that controls are different, in particular there is no subtitle offset present, a function necessary for me... On my android phone is available, on the Shield (Android also) not... On the shields there are a lot of difference, it seems the interface is very poor of commands if compared with the other platforms.

Do you have any hints/suggestion? Thank you

The Android app is a web wrapper while the Android TV app is a native app. Because of this it has a completely different UI and code base.

If you don't mind my asking. Why do you need subtitle offset? Are you using OpenSubtitles and the subs aren't perfectly matched?

Yes, italian subtitles often are not in sync. Using subtitle offset it is really easy to fix at start and after commercial breaks.

Unfortunately, the Android TV app does not have that capability yet.

Thank you. Do you know if it is planned? There is a "wish list" to promote this feature?

The Android TV app's playback engine is being reworked. Subtitle offset may be included, but not initially. So it may be a while before this happens.

As a workaround, I am using kodi as a client with the jellyfin plugin. Kodi has an outstanding subtitles management!
