Behind vpn and dns. No connection - hedztrem - 2024-07-04

I recently got openvpn working on my asus router. And have tried to get jellyfin to work after that. Several People said setting up an dns should help. but after days trying im almost loosing it.

I can connect to my router if i try my dns-adress with a certain port i forwarded.

The jellyfinserver is active on my mac mini. And I tried open port 8096 without luck. I also wanted to test https and port to that but get styck with creating a sll certificate is way to Hard.

Any tips? Have i missed something in jellyfins settings? Due the sucess to connect to router it seems like a problem in jellyfinserver setting..

In the openvpn settings there should be a setting to bridge your VPN clients to your main VLAN.

On my router in the screenshot, it is called "Push LAN0 (br0) to clients".

Unfourtanely i dont have anything like that. Can it be "Accept dns Configuration" under vpn client options you refering to? I have the choise "disabled, relaxed, stricted and exclusive"

If its not can you please Google asus merlin vpn settings and hint what i missed

Is Jellyfin listening on that port (8096)?
If this port is forwarded and "Require HTTPS" is not checked, you should be able to connect. Try to connect to it from the inside first instead of over VPN.

It looks the VPN clients should be able to access the LAN by default.

Inside works. For example. On my iphone with wifi and typing internal ip 192.168.218:8096 the jellyfin login popups

Switch the phone to 4G or 5G, connect to the VPN and go to 192.168.218:8096. Does this work?
If it doesn't, what's the VPN's port? You may have to forward that port if there's anything between the router and the internet.

Sorry for not understanding. I just tried to install vpn on my Phone and use the mobile network 5g. Instead of using wifi and connect to router with vpn. How can i in this stage use internal ip?
When ovpn gives my random wan ip.

It doesn't work to try 192.168.218 at that stage.
However as i mentioned before. I can get to my routers inlogpage through my dns adress. So something is working just not with jellyfin

You said you can connect to a port you forwarded in your original post, hence I assumed it's only the access to your Jellyfin server that's not working.
Do you have the OpenVPN client installed and configured on the phone? Without it it certainly won't work.
Can you post screenshots?

yes i did, perhaps i had it wrong. I mean. My setup for ovpn is in openvpn on my asus router with merlin. And there i also created a dns to reach my computer from outside my home. I cant get jellyfin to work but yesterday i noticed i can sucessfully go to web gui for the router outside my home trough my dns-adress with port 8443.

So no, i dont have openvpn client in phone. The asus router takes all my devices through its own openvpn. But when you asked me to test internal ip from phone i downloaded ovpn app and tested it on my phone.

EDIT: if i disable vpn on router my dns and port for jellyfin works instantly. Also typing wan ip with port works. So its something blocking with vpn. And a dumb question maby. as mentioned i set up ovpn under openvpn. In clientoptions. Not server. Whats the difference? vpn working so guess i did it wright.
