Issues with sharing after update - xyncro - 2024-07-19
I have some problems with DLNA after upgrade to v10.9.7.
Even if it seemed DLNA had it's own life, before upgrade i used v10.8.12 and DLNA was working.. well.. up to 80% of the time i wanted to use streaming to TV.
I have the Jellyfin software set up on a windows 11 pro and i have until now used my Samsung to 'forward' the streaming to my LG TV.
I'm primarly using Jellyfin for own purpose at home.
To the problems then..
After upgrading i was 'locked out' both from browser and later (still) from Jellyfin app on my Samsung.
After numerous frustrating attempts i finally gave up and uninstalled everything to start clean. But i noticed folders on C:\program\* was packed with files which in my mind didn't match with a clean new installation to a previous version, but i installed v10.8.12 anyway and it only got messier. Long story short, using safe mode to force remove all folders, and everything good so far.. in my mind anyway.
So.. now i could install the latest v10.9.7 and browser opened up like a welloiled machine to make all necessary setting + scanning harddrives to populate Jellyfin, all good so far.
But.. Jellyfin acts.. 'weird'.. most of the things work, but i cannot connect DLNA anymore... n o t a c h a n c e.....
And.. the Jellyfin app in my Samsung won't log in to the ip address on the computer i have Jellyfin on..
It 'feels'.. as if the server is not present.. and yes, i have searched and searched and searched some more on that asumed server i have..
I have the tray icon, and it starts automatically, and my browser won't work if i stop Jellyfin through the tray..
And whats with the server..? I came across a video on youtube explaining how to set server to start immediately.. without delay..
So i Run > services.msc.. to find.. nothing.. so i thought i missed something when installing, so i installed same software again..
But.. guess what.. there was nothing implicating that a server option could be made while installing, not like in the older versions.
I have also all kinds of ip addresses accepted in my Avast firewall.. (localhost/* , 0.0.0.0 , 127.0.0.1/* , 192.168.x.xxx/* ...)... and even God Himself/*.. but it still won't work to log in on the Jellyfin phone app, nor activating DLNA for streaming..
And now i've run out of ideas...

have you installed the new DLNA plugin? DLNA was removed as a core function and is now only available though the DLNA plugin.

DLNA was move from being part of the core server to being a plugin that is NOT installed by default. The plug is available in the official plugin catalog.
It sounds like you are only having issues with DLNA, correct? Since you were able to set it up in a browser.

When you say "my Samsung" what type of device is that? Is it the computer Jellyfin is running on? Or is it a phone?

Yeap.. both v2 and v1.. no sign of life in any of them.. and still at this moment..

Correct.. at first i didn't get catalog cache to react as fast as i wanted.. and as it worked before on v10.8.12.. all was kind of in a 'zombie' mode.. some images was shown and some not.. and when i went inside a movie all was blurred.. but i thought it will fix that later and my main issue was the function of the DLNA..

Sorry for not clearing that out.. it was my Samsung Galaxy S20+ 5G smartphone..
On my very first setup with v10.8.12.. a super software i might add.. i connected all my devices.. my main NUC Gen13 i7-1360p computer with WD Elements harddrives (i'll get WD Reds for a NAS later) where everything resides, with my smartphone and LG TV..
And to watch a flick on TV i used my smartphone as a remote to start everything on the TV.. it might be an odd way.. but hey.. im happy i got everything to work as i wanted..
But.. i upgraded to v10.9.7 and its there where all mess started..
Nothing worked as if the setup zeroed all settings and i needed to start from scratch.. plus i couldn't log in.. nor on my stationary NUC or in my Samsung smartphone..
And i was searching for solutions on the net but couldn't find anything similar to what i experienced.. so i thought i tear all down and start from scratch..
It was then it got messier.. i checked my C:\programs folder and noticed, even though i've uninstalled the Jellyfin/server folder was still full with all kinds of files, manily .dll's..
So i thoght i through that in the bin and all is good to start new.. but it wasnt that easy.. i have to go through safe mode to be able to 'release' the folders from the windows grip..
Finally when i got rid of everything i could install new v10.9.7.. and from there i could start fresh.. but when webinterface started up it felt strange as if Jellyfin was working slow..
Since my first post here i've checked and searched the net for info when i came across a post on Reddit where one of your esteemed members "anthonylavado" gave the poster an advice to hard refresh browser (shift + f5).. can't reinstall Jellyfin one part i totally missed and thought wasn't necessary.. anyway.. and so i did.. Jellyfin then started to act.. well, more natural.. as if Jellyfins hard stomach goot it's release.. and all of a sudden the Android app in my Samsung also worked..
Soo.. where am i now..
Well.. i didn't get it all to work the same was as before.. due to DLNA not working..
What i instead did.. and came a cross in a post on the net was that i could open upp Jellyfin through TV browser instead and use Jellyfin from there.. after some fiddling i got everything working fine from my LG TV..
So now i don't need to use my Samsung smartphone as a remote to start the movies on my LG TV.. i only open up my TV browser from the bookmark i've set.. and *poff* Jellyfin is there to browse..
However.. there is one thing.. but it's not that it makes me sleepless at nights..
I have 5-6 media folder at the top set up with diffrerent media.. on my LG TV i only see 4.. and cannot access the left folders to the right.. to do that i my go through settings > media library.. and the same with the movies below.. i cant access them to the right.. the white 'arrow' to right and left are missing.. maybe thats a css issue i cant figure out by myself..
Soo.. the sum of all this writing is that Jellyfin is pretty much that my Jellyfin is working now.. at least to 99% compared to 95% before (with my smartphone as remote)..

To those who follow this thread..
I have some updates..
I was fiddling with the network settings since i've been adding "almost all" local ip's and port numbers from my network as application rules to my Avast firewall, and got my Jellyfin finally working as my previous installation.. but i wanted to see which ip's i could remove..
So here is how i did it..
I cleared out all ip's in Dashboard > Networking > LAN Networks ..because it made no difference for me to have anything there..
But.. to add/or not add 0.0.0.0 to Dashboard > Networking > Bind to local address ..made a huge difference..
* If i had the zeroes added i could use each device separatly.. and could not stream anything.. for example to my LG TV..
* But.. if i removed the zeroes from Dashboard > Networking > Bind to local address ..i suddenly got my Samsung smartphone Jellyfin app working as a remote where i could stream movies to my LG TV.. (as before)
This pretty much makes this "none functioning DLNA mystery", and thread solved..
A tip though.. to developers since im coding illiterate.. make a dedicated button of that wether users want to use phone as remote or just use TV browser..
