Jellyfin WebOS Freezing issue - lmihaig - 2024-07-23

Hello

Jellyfin Server version: 10.9.8.0
WebOS version: 5.40.20
TV Model: Um7100plb
Server hardware transcoding setup: Intel QSV, in proxmox debian LXC container with passthrough.

When viewing videos on my LG TV and videos have to be transcoded I am experiencing a weird freezing issue. The video plays fine for a couple of seconds and then it freezes but the audio continues. If I manually skip ahead i experience the same problem, video plays for 2-5s and then freezes but audio and subtitles continue normally.
This problem does not exist when direct streaming.

I have tried disabling subtitles and it has not changed the behaviour. I tested multiple containers, video and audio codecs and it does not seem to be specific to any one, all of the ones that can't be direct played suffer this problem.

I'm not experiencing this issue on the Android, Firefox web or linux clients.

What other things could I try out to pinpoint the issue?

In the WebOS app, try disabling "prefer fMP4" in the client settings.

Yup, that completely fixed it thank you! Sorry if this was something well known, I searched around a bit but haven't found this fix before this.

Normally that box SHOULD be checked. Which is why is checked by default now whereas it wasn't in prior versions. BUT, there is a regression/bug in the WebOS app that causes issues when it is checked. Unchecking it resolves issues with playback until the bug is fixed.

Keep in mind that WebOS requires MP4 for HDR content so you are losing HDR until the bug fix is released.

Now just a question: I have that option disabled, and whenever I play an HDR film the LG TV reports that HDR is enabled during playback. Why is HDR enabled for me without that option checked? Could it have something to do with the TV model itself or what am I missing?

You would not be the first person to report that different model LG TVs behaving vastly differently.

Perhaps it depends on the kind of HDR?  IDK.

Well, just for posterity most of my HDR content is HDR10 and my TV model is 50UQ70700ZUE.

Ah. HDR10 is super compatible. Yay open standards. I convert all my DV7 and DV8 to HDR10 for this reason.
