Video padding / letterbox - bdushok - 2024-07-25

I'm encountering a problem with 3D content.   I don't believe the problem is Jellyfin related, but I'm wondering if there is a way Jellyfin can help me fix the problem.

I have quite a few 3D FSBS files on my Jellyfin server.   I'm using version 10.9.7 on Ubuntu Linux installed from the repos.   My files are all 3840 wide (2 1920 images side by side) with a vertical resolution which varies based upon the aspect ratio of the videos.   The problem is most noticeable with videos which are scope, approx 2.39 to 1 aspect ratio.   These files have a resolution of 3840 by about 810.

I'm viewing on a project using an Apple TV 4K and Infuse Pro.    When playing my projector switches to 4K mode due to the horizontal width of the stream.   I use the projectors menu to switch it to 3d sbs mode.   The left / right images are projected on each other (for 3d) and fill the screen horizontally.   Either the projector switches to 1080p for 3D or it scales each half of the stream so the left / right images fill the screen.

The problem is the vertical resolution.   It doesn't touch the vertical resolution, it's still the exact height it was when being projected in 4K mode.   This causes the video to be too short.   Effectively the image is 4.78 to 1.   I really need to scale the vertically 2x to fix the problem.

Within Infuse I can use the stretch option.   With files with a narrower aspect ratio this works fine.   With the 2.39 to 1 files the video is stretched out of proportion.   People appear 10 feet tall Smiling-face

I'm thinking if I adjust the video to be taller, like 1080 tall, by padding the top and bottom of the image the problem might be solved.

Does Jellyfin have an option, possibly through transcoding, to pad a video to a specific width or height?    I should be able to accomplish the same thing using ffmpeg, but I would prefer not to modify my files.   It would also likely be a very time consuming process due to the number of files I have.

Thanks,
Bob
