Audio selection in Android TV - WoodyBABL - 2024-07-27

In the Android phone app, I can make audio and caption track selections before I play. Unless I'm missing something, I don't see the same option in the Android TV app. You can make the selections once the file has started, but that sort of diminishes the cinema experience if you have to pause just as the movie's starting. Am I missing g something? Why would the UI be different between the two Android experiences?

Thanks.

One is Android (for phones), and the other is Android TV.

The Android TV app is using its custom-built UI for TVs.

The Android phone app is using the Jellyfin Web-UI interface.

I guess my pre-coffee question was a little inarticulate. I realize different app platforms have different app interfaces (UI). I just meant why would we have audio/caption selection available pre-play on phones and tablets and not on available on the TV app?

The TV app is what many would be using in a home theatre setting. Sometimes I've had files with the wrong audio default setting. In the Android TV app, I have to start playing the movie, realize the audio track is wrong, pause, and select the right one from the audio selection in the player. Which, as I said, sort of puts a speed bump in the family settling in, popcorn ready, movie night experience. I'm just wondering why the choice was made to not be able to choose the audio/captions before play in the TV app.

Is this a question I should post in the Android TV development subforum?

I can't really provide an answer other than "that's how it was built". You'll need to wait for a dev that worked on the ATV app to comment on an exact reason why.

In any case, this sounds like a good feature request. I would check if it already exists, and if not, make a new request for the new functionality: http://features.jellyfin.org/

I know that Niels is working on the 0.17 beta. I don't see anything yet about being able to select audio tracks prior to initiating playback in the PRs for 0.17. Since my wife and kid use my Chromecast I can't push it to the beta to test that.

Thanks to you both for the responses. Post coffee, I installed element and checked out the chat on Matrix. I asked the question there and Niels responded that it's not implemented. I'm not a developer and I don't play one on TV. 😂 I'm just a user who freakin' loves Jellyfin. But this one little thing has me asking, "Why?" If I can pre-choose between Stereo and 5.1 sound on the phone app -- and I'm pretty sure my Pixel doesn't have a subwoofer -- I feel the TV experience should have the same choice. That's not a knock at all, it's just a suggestion. I'll take your advice and look at the feature requests.

[update: someone did request it a while back: https://features.jellyfin.org/posts/595/android-tv-audio-stream-pre-selection-like-in-normal-android

And again, much thanks and appreciation to the Jellyfin community. 👍
