Jellyflin Web Client Won't Play Any Files - fernandodesouzavieira - 2024-07-28

After I updated to Jellyfin Server 10.9.8, the web client doesn't play anything. I can log in, access libraries, download files, all seems fine, but when I click play I get the message:

Playback Error
Playback failed because the media is not supported by this client.

On the Jellyfin Media Player for Windows, everything plays as expected on my machine. I tried both h.264 and h.265 files, both used to play normally on my Android phone or using the browser via PC, doesn't look like a problem on the client device capabilities, I used to watch the same files on these devices.

I tried playing the video files on the Android app selecting the "External Player" option and then it played flawlessly.

I don't transcode anything (transcode is not enabled, only audio), I use directplay for all my devices.

My server is an OrangePiZero3 4GB RAM running Debian 12 Bookworm

You should probably enable transcoding. The reason Jellyfin Media Player and some of the external players on the Android app can play them, is because those players are much more capable of direct playing your media.

I enabled transcoding once when I was setting up my server last year, it didn't work well because the OrangePi hardware can't handle it. But that wasn't a problem, since I could directplay everything smoothly on all the devices I used, so I never needed to transcode anything.

I tried to access the logs on the jellyfin Dashboard to investigate this issue, and I found a bunch of FFmpeg.Remux logs, but they are all empty 0 bytes. Seems like there is an issue in the remux of these files? I would share these logs if they weren't empty, looks like there is a problem with the log writing as well

Share the main jellyfin log via pastebin since it would contain what ffmpeg command it was attempting to use. Also, what installation method did you use?

While looking for the Jellyfin logs, I noticed they were all blank. There was a partition for /var/log/ in /dev/zram1 it was 100% full at 47MB. After I cleared some space in it, things got back to normal. I guess ffmpeg won't work as expected if it can't write its logs.

Most things don't work correctly when /var/log is full. So it's working now?
