Using Jellyfin for photo's - baldnut - 2023-06-20

Hi there, I am looking to move all of my media onto my server with Jellyfin (when I install it).

I am very keen to use it for my photos. I have been looking for any documentation or examples of its use with photo's for organising them as well as sharing with family etc. Is there anything you can share with me?

I suppose as I write this I could install on my Mac and have a play before I setup my server.

Kind regards

No. Jellyfin is not desinged to use with Photos.
I would recommend something like Immich or photoprism

That is in fact correct, however tbo i not have seen one user utilize it and there is not even mention of it in the official doku:
https://jellyfin.org/docs/general/server/media/books/

I think its an feature that although exists, is not maintained sry.

I tried it, it works very well Smiling-face

I tried it on a dev server and quite liked it, for what it's worth. I did decide it was more suitable for a curated sub-collection of "best ofs" rather than all photos, which will need a re-think of how I store my photos, but that's a use case thing rather than a Jellyfin thing. I do remember being annoyed that the thumbnails didn't auto-rotate where relevant, but that may have a fix I didn't get deep enough in to identify. It certainly got me closer to what I was after than anything else I had tried at the time.

lo sto usando dopo aver collegato google foto e funziona benissimo. Una volta che la libreria è stata creata, puoi definire un nuovo utente affinché possa essere visualizzato da altriOk-hand

family photos and videos work very well with Jellyfin. No problems, very basic. I prefer it to google drive, and it allows you to download items.

The docs do mention photos:
https://jellyfin.org/docs/general/server/libraries

Quote:You can also add other types of media such as books or photos.

Although, I am a little worried about adding photos if this feature is on its way out... Is this feature on its way out?

It would be nice to have everything in Jellyfin, instead of having to install and maintain a bunch of different apps for different media.

I do use this feature to easily see photos and videos in my family album on the tv. Don’t think other photo apps have the same use case though of course one could cast their phone etc

Issue I’m trying to work through as I select a good photo management solution is how to choose best of breed apps and get them to be compatible with each other and play well with proprietary file formats eg HEVC.

JF has a straightforward approach to how it likes to view and display albums and its images. Others have I think incompatible ways of storing the library. Would be great if FOSS apps were somehow loosely coupled but also *cohesive* when working together
