Transcoding for iOS and macOS - milesmorales - 2024-08-20

Hello, I've recently started using my Jellyfin server on my PC with specs: Ryzen 5 5600x and Nvidia RTX 3060Ti, I came across these settings called Hardware Acceleration and Encoding & Decoding, my clients are all Apple devices involving an iPhone, and iPad and a MacBook Air, my media majorly consisits of Blu-ray remuxes with Dolby Vison (DV) all in HEVC/H.265 format!

I want to play DV on my devices as all of them are capable of playing DV as per Apple's documentation, what should be my ideal Decoding and Encoding settings so as to experience DV?

Currently these are my settings, kindly suggest the appropriate settings for the same! Also how do I know if I'm playing DV or not? There isn't enough info on the Playback info tab?

Just disable encoding in AV1 - Your card doesn't support it. Besides that, it looks fine.

Will Tone Mapping kill DV and convert it to SDR? Or it will only work if the client doesn't support it?

DV will only work if the client supports it. Tone mapping should be enabled. It doesn't prevent DV or HDR content from being played. It will only kick in if the client doesn't support it.

Great! Thank you very much! Is there a way to know if I'm playing DV or not? In the Playback Info tab there isn't much info on the HDR

If the device does not support DV, it will transcode the media instead. To verify this, go to your dashboard while the media is playing and click on the info button of the playing media. You will see that the reason for transcoding is "The video's range type is not supported."
