Nvidia GTX960 vs AMD RX580 for transcoding? - bughidudolo - 2024-08-24

Hello everyone

I am building a new TrueNas Scale NAS with an old PC and I want to include a graphics card to do transcoding

I have a GTX 960 and a RX580 lying around, which one would be better?

The rest of the system has
- Ryzen 7 2700x
- 16Gb ddr4 Ram
- 128gb SSD for OS + 10TB for the NAS

I also know that I might be able to just do transcoding on the CPU, but I don't know how well it would work for large 4k bluerays with DB and DA

Thanks in advance for your help

Neither are a great choice. Of the two the GTX 960 is better. And 4K Blurays are only viable for this system if your client can direct play them.

If you're willing to spend a little money, the Intel Arc A310 or A380 are cheap, readily available, and are transcoding champs.
