Washed out picture with subtitles on! - Lithorium - 2024-09-03

Trying to watch GOT (using a 4k hdr rip), and coming up with frustration.

When subtitles are off, the image is bright and colourful and how it should be.

With subtitles on, the picture is dull, most colours being more grey than they should.

This reverts back to its colour once subtitles are turned off. Turning subtitles on or off seems to require the reloading of an entire file, as sometimes 20 / 30 seconds go by before it is playable again. Flicking between different subtitles doesn’t appear to do this and takes a second or 2 to load different languages.

For context, using Jellyfin on my main gaming pc, streaming in the same house to my lg g2. This also happens on my other streaming methods however.

Using (I think it is all set up correctly) Open Subtitles.

Images below show the subtitle options I have, and a small screenshot as the photo files were too large to upload video evidence. Particularly noticeable in skin tones, clothing and hair.

Your subtitles are currently PGS. Most clients do not support PGS subtitles. This means that Jellyfin has to burn in the subtitles, which requires transcoding. Currently Jellyfin will transcode and tone map HDR to SDR, regardless of why the video needed the transcode.

If you are using a free Open Subtitles account, there is a daily download limit of 20 and there is no way to dictate what shows/movies get prioritized. When you do get Open Subtitle downloads, they should be SRT subs which shouldn't require they be burned in.

There is way being done to add HDR to HDR transcoding in Jellyfin, but no ETA on that.

Does this mean I am stuck with it? Rather annoying! Is there no way to get the correct version of the subtitles? Thanks

There is work being done to allow Jellyfin-web based clients to directly play PGS subs. Including our WebOS client. But that hasn't been published yet.

You have the "correct" version of the subtitles. I don't use this myself, but IIRC Bazarr has some subtitle management tools including managing and controlling what subs are retrieved from Open Subtitles.

Open Subtitles also has premium accounts that ups the daily download limit to 1000 per day.
