How to use subtitle extract? - Milklord - 2024-09-12
I'm trying to use subtitle extract, but when I run it on schedule tasks, it instantly finishes and does nothing. I have no idea how to use linux, so please explain simply! I'm running jellyfin on CasaOS

If there are no subtitles to extract, it will finish pretty fast.
What are you expecting Subtitle Extract to do? It will extract the embedded subs from your video containers and stores them in the config folder. The point being having subtitles load a bit faster since they're already pre-extracted before playback.

I'm not fully sure what it does, I thought it would extract subtitles from the MKV files? Is there a way we can see the extracted subtitle files? Basically all my files have embedded subtitles, my main issue is some of those have weird fonts. Does subtitle extract turn the files into SRTs? I've found that Opensubtitles doesn't always download stuff that is synced well, so is there a way to take the extracted subtitles and turn them into an SRT file?
Also a bit unrelated, but even though I checked off that images should be stored in the file folder, they are stored in the main jellyfin folder. How do I fix this?

Subtitle Extract will pre-extract the sub, in whatever format they are, and store them in the configuration folder. The extracted subtitle files will not have the name of the video, so it will be hard to figure out which subs belong to which movies.
Converting subtitles from one format to another will not fix the sync issue unless the format itself is the reason you experience a bug with subtitle timing.
You can use a tool like SubtitleEdit to pull subs from videos and convert them to SRT subs. Then use another tool like MKVToolNix to mux the SRT subs back in to a new video container, or just simply store the subs along the media in your Jellyfin server.

The subtitle extract plugin only extracts embedded subs. It does not convert them AFAIK. Also, if your subs are image based (PGS, DVDSUB) that would require an OCR to convert to SRT, which is not something a plugin can do.
The extracted subtitles are buried in /config/data/subtitles/. It is not sorted in a human readable way.
