Multiple libraries in one collection - Lance - 2024-09-13

Hello,

i am currently thinking of expanding my jellyfin medias with documentaries. However i dont want them mixed with my  shows and movies, so i would want a dedicated documentaires section. Documentaires are however often shows and movies. My initial thought was to just put them in a mixed library, but the mixed library is only legacy and may be gone in some time in the future, so i am looking for a solution to have my folder with documentaires shows and with documentaries movies show up under the same Documentaries section in jellyfin.

I know this may be a niche case, but what would be the proper way to implement this?

Collections are an option. Have your documentaries in their own shows and movies library, then add all the documentaries into a unified collection.

Another option is to use an external tool to generate NFOs and download images then use the Music Videos library type, which doesn't have external metadata providers by default, and Jellyfin will use your externally generated NFOs.

Tiny Media Manager and Sonaar are both tools that you can use to pull down metadata external to Jellyfin.

It may sound stupid, but how do i create collections? I only have one collection and that is the one which is automatically created for box sets. I cant seem to find an option for creating collections?

As long as the collection is automatically updated when new documentaries are added to the folders, i am very fine with this approach.

edit: Ok i think i missunderstood your idea. I think you meant to add the docus manually to a collection which then show inside the general "collections" folder and then alongside e.g. the spiderman collection, the marvel collection and so on. That is not what i want. I want them in their own "folder" on the main screen. Ironically exactly what the mixed library is doing.

Collections are not automatically updated (except by the TMDB box set plugin).  Nor can you add whole libraries, you can only add items.  But you can "select all" and add shows/movies in bulk.

Click on "..." for the show and "Add to Collection".  This will bring up a menu to add to an existing collection or a new collection.  If you click and HOLD on an item it will bring up the multi-select UI.  In the top right click on "..." and select all, or click on the items you want to add, and add to collections.

Yeah, i figured out what you meant after writing my comment. Thats not really what i was looking for.
I want a dedicated "folder" for documentaries on my homescreen as docus are something which i let run in the background while i do other stuff, while when i watch movies or shows, my attention is usually only at the TV. Thats why i want a dedicated library, because then i can just go into the documentaries, switch something on while i do other stuff.

I guess i just use a mixed library for now and then later on a show or movie library as my metadata is sourced from a program which name i cannot mention here but sound suspiciously similar to a radar or a sonar.
