Planning to use a Optane Drive or RAM-Disk as Transcoding Disk - Skankhunt42 - 2024-09-18

Hi,

quick question, because i couldn't find any information about this yet.
How big should the Live-Transcoding disk be when planning with 5-6 4K Transcodes at the same time?
I planned to use an Optane Drive or a RAM-Disk for the Transcoding Directory to increase the performance.

A normal SSD will be fine for this, using Optane/Ramdisk will not improve performance. For 6x4K Transcodes at 120Mbit you would only need a combined max write speed of a approx 90MB/sec.

If you do decide to go ramdisk, make sure you have enough space to fit all six 4K transcodes inside as to not run of of space and get errors, this could be over 100GB of ram per movie (if you're transcoding to 120Mbit), so not achievable on a consumer board.

If you do go with a RAM disk make sure you've enabled transcode throttling and delete segments. That will limit disk usage for big files.

Damn, didn't even know this was an option.  Things you learn everyday!
