Play videos from usb connected to TV - Vladimir Baranetsky - 2024-10-18

Hello guys. I have a question regarding jellyfin library. I have LG smart tv on which installed Jellyfin app. It's very good for me also because it see DV layer when I play my movies from computer in 8 profile. But in some cases there can be big files such as BluRay Remux with big bitrate and huge quantity of audio tracks inside container, which made playing of file very problematic, facing braking each few seconds. In this case I have to put those files to external USB drive and connect it to TV directly. So the quastion is, can I somehow force to see Jellyfin exteernal USB connected to TV? I also can play those files on LG player, but he see only HDR layer. Also have Nvidia Shield Pro, maybe with it also possiblу to do something. Thanks!

No jellyfin won't detect an external drive on a TV.

What are the specs of your Jellyfin server?

I think if the file has a too high bitrate to play on TV, an easy solution is to force transcoding my selecting a lower bitrate limit on the player, that should force a transcode at a lower bitrate.

The TV plays files with high bitrate without any problems from USB connected to TV, just breaking by DLNA, but again it's only for big remux's.

How does DLNA factor into this?  If you're using the Jellyfin app on your, I'm assuming, WebOS LG TV then the app should be directly connecting to your server natively and not with DLNA.

We'd need to see your jellyfin logs to see what is going on.  Can you share those via pastebin?

I mean that when I play video from computer through Jellyfin, also the same for Plex or LG media player. The big files (BDRemuxes) with bitrate higher then may be 60 mbits breaking. If I play the same file from USB connected to TV it plays good. I assume the problem with tv ethernet port speed, which is restricted to 100mbits. That's why I asked about possibility to play files from USB connected to TV through the Jellyfin app.

Use WiFi on your TV. TV makers skimp on the ethernet controller and WiFi usually ends up being significantly faster on TVs. And, no. The USB needs to be attached to the computer running the jellyfin server.
