Playback Problems - yodathewhite - 2024-10-23 I'm very new to Jellyfin using version 10.9.11 on Windows 10 Pro, and just trying to get things working right. The video port connection being used is a DP at the PC and runs to a HDMI port on my TV ( DP to HDMI cable ). I'm just using the motherboards video. I assume this DP connect is adequate and I don't require a HDMI card? I'm using Make MKV to rip my DVD and Blu rays on to my hard drive. I haven't tried watching any of the ripped titles all the way through to the ending, but it seems like the DVDs have ripped fine from what I have noticed. However many ( not all ) blu ray movies I'm ripping are having playback problems. Some freeze up like Star Wars Episode 1 during the story introduction and don't resume unless you skip the chapter. Some have numerous momentary video distortions. Some movies have millisecond pauses throughout the movie playback around every 5 to 10 seconds. I've tried re-ripping some of the movies but get the same results. I am just using the files directly from Make MKV in my library. I haven't used Handbrake yet. I do not have extensive computer knowledge nor extensive knowledge of some of the programs like Make MKV. I would be okay with down grading some of the video content from 1080P to 720P, but haven't looked into this yet. I'm not trying to set this up to host a server, so it would seem the processing power of my PC should be fine. I'm okay with having Jellyfin run just on this device or perhaps to one other device or PC in my home. This is what system I'm using. From what I have read it should be fine to run the Jellyfin etc. My system: System Model HP EliteDesk 800 G3 SFF System Type x64-based PC Processor Intel® Core i7-7700 CPU @ 3.60GHz, 3600 Mhz, 4 Core(s), 8 Logical Installed RAM 8.00 GB (7.88 GB usable) System type 64-bit operating system, x64-based processor Also have: - 2 new internal seagate enterprise hard drives ( non refurbished ) 20TB and 18TB - New external Blu ray burner - ASUS BW-16D1X-U : link: https://www.amazon.ca/Computer-International-BW-16D1X-U-Powerful-Blu-ray/dp/B071VP89X1/ref=sr_1_2?crid=1WPWFRS92WIAH&dib=eyJ2IjoiMSJ9.iwtD-KGEeTDVI6_tx3vko9-MFZ4qeH17ylYsNLjZGQwMvu1L8D0YFFdPiK9NQiIK2-BeJWipYZm2AAUkur5IHFUbUNwIv5UJXXCOXhrRnW_GBtU2f49Bd_d5itYOe0lK_eTj0wjM71TuUg5gR5N6GEA5SqrQvoZ-QXcel56fjSRV0TxokxvMdogdzHsMYYYdgkqrsh8iwu321WrA4f6pJi-GWNHLH85yAGVQep92yYKLM0S5mNLypQWPg6imZ2_XQsIs4MMKmOB7PPDw8s50q-WSvh-l6pgrzC74ow3XGZ4.JkaQSlxyKCi2aIWmnDfC2vwTAPEP1aHumkPEfUNNO_Q&dib_tag=se&keywords=asus+blu+ray&qid=1729636807&sprefix=asus+blu+ray%2Caps%2C152&sr=8-2 Not that I know how to change it, but could the ripping speed of my Blu Ray burner be too high to the hard drive creating errors in the playback? Also trying to set up a second path to my second internal 18TB hard drive, but haven't quite figured out how to do that. Would appreciate some help. Thanks RE: Playback Problems - TheDreadPirate - 2024-10-23 I'm assuming you are using MakeMKV? Can you share your jellyfin server logs via pastebin so we can eliminate that as a factor? RE: Playback Problems - yodathewhite - 2024-10-24 Yes I am using Make MKV. I'm using the ripped files from Make MKV directly in my Jellyfin account. I'm fine to share my server logs with pastebin, but I have never used it before. I assume I need to make an account with Pastebin.com however I still won't know how to use it unfortunately. Willing to try it though. RE: Playback Problems - TheDreadPirate - 2024-10-24 You don't need to make an account, IIRC. You literally just open the log in a text file, copy, go to pastebin.com, paste, save, and then it generates a link you can share. RE: Playback Problems - yodathewhite - 2024-10-24 I actually decided to try Handbrake yesterday and encoded Star Wars Episode 1 from the Make MKV file. The Handbrake mp4 file that was created seems to work fine. I suppose it makes a lot of sense to use Handbrake with all the space savings it creates and so far it seems to be solving whatever problem with playback I was having. I'll try some of the other movies that were being problematic soon. That being said, I was wondering if you have any advice on what to encode it to on Hand Brake for standard Blu rays and for Standard DVDs? The Star Wars in MKV was about 39GB/ On Hand Brake I selected HQ 1080p H.264 with 24FPS and the file was only 4.3GB. Also did Star Trek The Motion Picture: original MKV was 33GB and encoded it to Super HQ 1080p H.265 with 24FPS. The new Star Trek file was only 2.8GB. They both look pretty good, but if you have any suggestions to improve quality please let me know. I don't mind having movie files that are closer to 10GB if it is worth it. For DVDs or even Blu Rays for that matter, will Hand Brake upgrade or upscale them if you choose resolutions that are higher than the original source? RE: Playback Problems - TheDreadPirate - 2024-10-24 It will upscale them, but not in a way that looks better than the original. Don't bother, IMO. If you have a GPU in the PC running handbrake, it does support all the major hardware acceleration types. RE: Playback Problems - yodathewhite - 2024-10-26 Ok thanks. Appreciate the info and the help! So far things are continuing to work fine since taking the Make MKV files and re encoding / down sizing the files in HandBrake. Is it possible the larger ripped MKV files were perhaps too large to play effectively? Too much for the onboard video of my HP i7 7700? Whatever the case, all seems fine now. RE: Playback Problems - TheDreadPirate - 2024-10-26 I don't have enough information to make any conclusions, but the hardware should be plenty capable. RE: Playback Problems - yodathewhite - 2024-12-23 Hi, I have a couple quick question I was wondering if you might be able to help me with? I may have to go to a MakeMKV forum for the answer, but I have had several movies come out after using MakeMKV that has the main audio being commentary from the director or perhaps described video for the hearing impaired. Is there away to discern which audio is correct when selecting the audio prior to coping the file using MakeMKV? Or is there a way to change the audio? I normally just copy all the "English" audio segments including English subtitles. Very frusting to have the movies not work properly. Secondly do you know if there is a good program for combining movie files together? For example The Lord Of The Rings series in Extended Editions come on 2 discs. Is there a good program for putting the 2 files from each disc together so it is 1 file? Appreciate any help you can offer. RE: Playback Problems - TheDreadPirate - 2024-12-23 I never used MakeMKV to select audio tracks. I always copied everything from MakeMKV and used Handbrake and later ffmpeg to select tracks I wanted to keep. MKVToolnix is the program I used to merge my LotR extended editions rips. |
