GPU - William Li - 2023-09-03

Hello everyone I'm using a DELL PowerEdge R720 running Debian 12 as my NAS and running Jellyfin on it. I'm wondering which GPU is suitable for me to use for transcoding. Now I have a list of them, but don't know how to choose:
  1. Intel DG1 (Very cheap. But I heard that it has capability issues with motherboards older than the 10th gen. It does work on Windows, but don't know whether it works under Debian12)
  2. NVIDIA GT1030 (Also very cheap, and supports multiple formats according to NVIDIA's matrix.)
  3. NVIDIA TESLA P4 (More expensive than the above two GPUs. But it has 8G of GPU memory and multiple NVENC chip)

It's not the most robust model but I picked up a couple of quadro p400 on ebay for pretty cheap and they have served me well.

Match your hardware to your media to your transcoding needs. Is your media primarily x265 and most of the clients consuming it don't support that? Find a GPU that can decode it. Interested in newer codecs? Find hardware that supports them.
