Building a home media server - LoneWombat - 2024-11-03
Hi Guys,
So I'm in the process of building a home server for a friend.
He wants to be able to transcode video files on the fly when the video format is not compliant with the device requesting the stream.
The Media server would hold 4K videos in HDR and DTS audio.
Aside from streaming movies/series trought Jellyfin the system will also host a handful of Docker containers.
As OS, I will use Ubuntu.
I focused on assembling the most cost effective system with also keeping power usage in mind.
Also there is only 1 drive for data, since the system will not be holding any critical data, so losing it is not that big of a deal.
The setup that i have put together:
- Motherboard/CPU combo: ASRock N100DC-ITX
- 19v Power adapter to power the motherboard
- 1 x 32 GB memory (Kingston KF432C16BB/32)
- 16TB HHD (Seagate ST16000NM001G)
- M.2 SSD 500 GB (Crucial CT500P3SSD
What do you guys think of this setup?

Mostly one, maybe sometimes two

Then the N100 should be enough for your use case.

Going with an i5-11400 wouldn't gain me alot them performance wise?
Just more expensive and more power usage?
My own setup is powered by a RPi5 (i know, not recommended) and i have to transcode all my files beforehand using Tdar to be able to play them on my TV when the codec is not supported by my TV.
With the N100 i won't have to do that I hope?

The 11400 would be significantly more performant. But the N100 should still meet your needs. Plain transcoding is definitely not a problem. Tone mapping is the primary concern. The N100 can definitely do 1 tone mapped stream. Not sure about two.
