Improve client usability - Six66Mike - 2024-11-17

I've been using the Android TV client (v 0.15.12 at last check) for a while now and wondering what it would take to make some usability and efficiency changes in the way users interact with the client. Primarily about browsing content and the current method which is very click intensive. Examples:

Vertical browsing - Say for instance browsing movies by genre or letter, each genre is a horizontal line, you have to click through every title to reach the end of the list. It would be far more efficient if users could click on a genre icon and have full page vertical browsing. There have been various threads and feature requests for this but nobody's really commented on it in terms of effort or likelihood. Seems like a pretty big win, especially for those with larger libraries. It's just so incredibly inefficient and time consuming to browse now that once it drops off the Latest list on the home screen, it just falls off the radar completely.

More view state filters - If browsing genres or by letter as above, there is currently no option to filter out content you've watched, adding to the number of times you have to press a button to skip to content you haven't seen yet.

Right now the only way to get vertical browsing and filters seems to be when you select All Items, which makes me Crying-loudly-face

Latest content - Allow the user to define what latest means, preferably time-based (30, 60, 90 days). I have latest Shows, Music and Movies on my home page and can't define what any of those look like.

More metadata or Views - When you go to Movies you have few View options, like Suggested, All Items, Genres. Would be good if movie landing pages or the Views options included things like movie studio, so we could see what companies were involved in a film and make them clickable.  So when I select a movie like Inside Out, I can see Disney and Pixar on the screen along with the genre, release year and classification rating, and be able to click them to see all other films from those companies. I touched on this one here - https://forum.jellyfin.org/t-making-use-of-metadata-in-the-client - There's so much rich metadata available and the client makes use of very little of it.  Would love to be able to click on a classification rating, production studio, tag, or any other number of options available

Keen to hear others thoughts on this or other ways to improve the usability and efficiency of the client.

So chance of dumping left-right navigation is basically 0?

Is there a client, plugin, CSS or any other mod I can use to get a proper poster wall instead of this absolutely idiotic 1 line display?

You're talking about the Android TV app.
What you're referencing is the smart view. You can disable this view per library to jump straight into the library view.
You can set the library view to scroll in either direction you want.

You can see what is currently being worked on for the ATV app here: https://github.com/orgs/jellyfin/projects/47

The Jellyfin Android TV app cannot be modified with CSS since it uses its own GUI and is not using the webUI.
You can only modify the webUI for Jellyfin with CSS. Anything that uses the webUI will see those changes.

Finally, keep in mind that this section of the forum is meant for discussing existing feature requests.
You can make proper feature requests here: https://features.jellyfin.org/
Just search for an existing request, and if non exists, you should submit your own.
It will let any volunteers know that someone wants a certain feature for Jellyfin.

Yes, Android TV app. Not necessarily referring to smart view.  After going to Movies (with smart view enabled), when you select All Items you see a full poster wall as if you had disabled smart view (this is how I have TV library setup).  If you select By Letter or Genres, you get vertical navigation where left-right is the only way to navigate.  There is no option in the app to select a letter or genre and see all movies in a full screen wall, or library view as you referred to it.

Already done, this was intended to be a question to see if anyone else would comment before I submitted formal requests.
