Roku stopping playback at random times. - scsjellyuser - 2024-11-27

Hello,

Have recently set up Jellyfin: Server is Ubuntu based PC with quadro card for transcoding. Client is a Roku Express.
Server is wired to a Virgin media hub 5x, Wireless to the Roku which is located ~ 50cm from the hub.

Issue is that at (seemingly) random times playback will stop, could be 5 mins into a film or an hour, but often enough to be frustrating and wont necesarily resume ok..

Logs don't show any issue as far as I can see, just that playback stopped by the Roku.

Any hints as to what it could be?
Monitoring server all looks good in terms of performance.. seems to be client side but nothing indicative in logs as to why it stops playback..

Are you running out of disk space for the transcode?

Does it only happen with The Hobbit? Or does this happen with everything?

No, disk space is fine having monitored that and it's not just that video. Only happening on the Roku, not on other clients (Windows/Ubuntu PCs).

I'm wondering if this github issue is related.

That issue seems to be actually starting a stream, whereas for me the stream is starting and playing ok, then just stops.

OK, actually have seen an issue.

On the dashboard I can see the file is being played, blue bar for progress, red bar filling for transcode - once the red bar is full, it goes grey, i.e. as if no transcode done yet and playback stops.

I guess the transcode is being deleted for some reason once complete..

The transcode is actually being deleted at this point also.

Testing on Android files play fine, transcoding completes and playback continues.. so for some reason when transcode completes, if it's Roku client, playback stops and transcode files are deleted.

I'll do some testing on my Roku and get back to you.

It's not always the above though. Can happen shortly after started or when skipping to other chapters..

Another log with an attempt to play Dune - videos does not even start this time, 'Error during playback' I think flashes up on the screen as it fails to play.
No indication of an error in the logs (turned on debug) unless anyone can see anything?

Seems very random..

Could it just be network dropping? Would this show an error?
Is there any logs on the roku app itself accessible?

Hmmmm. Its been a while since I've looked through a transcode debug log, but it looks a little odd. I'm not sure if this is a client or server bug. Leaning towards client.

Can you submit an issue on the Roku app's github?

Include both the logs you attached in your last post.
