Mount media dir read-only? - Boondocks1712 - 2024-11-28
Hello,
I run Jellyfin in a container and I'm currently mounting the media directory as read-only, however I wonder if that's completely ok, mainly because I'm not sure where all the metadata is downloaded and stored.
These are my mountpoints:
/media --> read-only
/config --> read-write
/cache --> read-write
Where are all the trickplay frames, series/episodes metadata, artwork, subtitles, etc stored? Radarr/Sonarr already creates some of this metadata in the media dir, bit is it expected to allow Jellyfin to also store more data alongside the media?
With recent versions I've seen that the initial load of Jellyfin is slow, and most of the films and TV shows pictures are blurred and it takes a while until they are displayed correctly, so I was suspecting that Jellyfin is trying to download them every time.
What's your view on this?

Jellyfin writes metadata, by default, to /config. This includes images, text, trickplays, etc. A lot of people make their media directory read only. Including myself.
If you are using NFOs for metadata, this could be an issue if you are also using the NFO to save watch status.

I'm not using the NFO metadata saver, so it should be alright.

Just to further point out, if you're going to keep your media folder read-only, make sure you don't have your library save images next to the media.
