Audio not playing on AppleTV app (but everywhere else) - blubleublue - 2024-12-02

Hi!

I have two fresh installations of Jellyfin 10.10.3 on

A) Proxmox mini PC within a LXC (mainly for testing)
B) Unraid NAS within a docker container (will be the final "production" installation)

Both systems have very similar hardware: Intel N100 + 8GB RAM
Jellyfin on both systems mount the same dataset/volume to build their library from the NAS. So they access basically the same data.

The problem on both installations:

One particular movie with 7.1 passthru audio is not playing sound on my TV when using the AppleTV app. It works fine on the same TV with the AndroidTV app version of the TV OS.
I noticed in the logs that it is direct play, and not transcoded.

I also tested the same movie converted to AAC and then audio works on AppleTV, too.

Can someone help me troubleshoot? Is this a transcoding problem? Or a problem with the AppleTV client?
What more info do you need? Logs? If so, which ones?  I fiddled with the transcoding settings now for hours and do not know what to do next...

I am about to digitize a ton of my physical movies and would love to avoid having them all in AAC but rather the RAW audio for my (future) home cinema audio system.
Knowing that I can keep the original audio and Jellyfin transcodes according to device/client`s needs would give me peace of mind.

Thanks in advance

Which app are you using on the Apple TV? Swiftfin?

Yes, it`s the only one I could find in the app store that seems related to Jellyfin. Version 1.0.1. – I should note that it works also well on other Apple devices such as the iOS native app and within web browsers (Chrome and Safari) on Mac OS Sequoia.

Ah. Ok, that is a pretty old version of Swiftfin. Swiftfin is in the middle of a re-vamp that currently only has a iOS/iPadOS version. An AppleTV version of the re-vamped Swiftfin is still a work-in-progress.

I know Infuse isn't free, but that is the only recommendation I have at this time. Or waiting (with no ETA).

As a small bit of feedback, this information is not something that's been well-communicated to users by the Jellyfin. I had to dig into github issues to learn that the ATV version of Swiftfin is different/behind the others. It'd be nice if it were mentioned in Swiftfin's readme.md that the TV version has serious issues, as I've seen a lot of threads about this issue here and in other places.

Thanks! I installed it already and its really nice and stable. I dont mind paying for software at all. In fact I prefer it much over free but half-baked stuff. I pay happily for things like Unraid and much more, incl. media streaming. Not here for piracy my captain Winking-face Btw.. I still have issues with transcoding, but now everything works just fine without transcoding enabled. I guess I keep it that way for now, until things change! Thanks again for your swift responses
