Remote Desktop Server - wenzelja - 2024-12-22

Now that I have a Jellyfin server setup and reverse proxy for remote access, I’d like to setup remote access to the computer itself. I’m on Windows 11 Home, so can’t use the Remote Desktop Connection.

I’ve seen TeamViewer and RustDesk as alternatives to Windows RDC, but have also read that TeamViewer has security issues. I was going to go with RustDesk since it FOS, but it’s seemingly developed by Chinese, so that is very concerning to me since I work in the DoD industry.

Are there any good alternatives to Windows RDC? I’m not sure that upgrading to Pro is worthwhile just to gain RDC functionality.

Check out VNC. It is a cross platform remote desktop protocol. All FOSS, many client and server options. I'm most familiar with TigerVNC.

RealVNC, TigerVNC, Nomachine are all pretty good. Just try them all and see which one you prefer.

It's a shame you only have Windows Home instead of Pro as despite those formerly mentioned programs being quite capable Windows Remote Desktop Connection is by far the best way to access a Windows machine remotely. The remote desktop created by RDC is like being on the machine itself - fast, clear, full resolution, just perfect really. If I didn't have Windows 11 Pro already I'd certainly consider it just for RDC alone. Does it cost much to update to Pro from Home?
