port forwarding - Jonny Cope - 2024-12-24 Please, before I get crucified, called names or any other negative and patronizing things people who don't know how to do stuff get called on the internet I'd like to provide a disclaimer: I have looked this up, yes. I checked this forum for my question, albiet quickly as I've been trying to figure this out for weeks and I just found this site and am exasperated. I'd like to be able to share my jellyfin server with a family member. They will be using an app on their TV (like Roku or something). I have follwed several port forwarding guides and none have worked. A lot of people sugguest using a third party app but again, my family watches things on their TV and if there is a way of doing that with out casting it from another device, I have yet to see it. Spectrum is my ISP, I set the port up through their app. I used a web page I found to see if my jellyfin port was open to be discovered, it was. I tried to log in on another device and network, nada. Anyway, if there is a guide or video that explains to someone who understands the concept of networks but confuses easily when jargon gets thrown around I'd be forever grateful. I am indimidated by the "you must be dumb" responses I see everywhere else, but I am desparate and asking. Oh, the set up is windows 11. Plain Jane. No Linux, no whaever OS controls a NAS. Just regular ol windows on a nice little mini pc. Thank you and I realise I am probably missing something easy... RE: port forwarding - crobibero - 2024-12-24 You might just need to allow Jellyfin access through your firewall. Check the windows QuickStart here: https://jellyfin.org/docs/general/quick-start/windows RE: port forwarding - use7 - 2024-12-24 In addition to checking your firewall settings, when you go to the other network what address are you typing in to access? You should be typing in the public ip where your server is hosted (if you google "What's my ipv4 address" you should see a few results that will give you your address). You'll want to be typing in something like http://XX.XXX.XXX.XX:8096 to the client address field. When you're setting up port forwarding to your server though you will want to make sure that you are forwarding the port to your server's local address (e.g. forward port 8096 to something like 192.168.1.50 or 10.10.0.50, you can check this value somewhere under your Network&internet pannel). Somethign that should be mentioned is that http traffic is not secure, the common recommendations are to set up either a reverse proxy (at the end of the tutorial linked by crobibero above) and enable https or use something like tailscale which gets touched on here: https://www.ethanmad.com/post/jellyfin_remote_access/ |
