Force audio transcode to save bandwidth - used - 2024-12-27

Is it possible to force transcode the audio to a specific encoder if it exceeds a certain bitrate, just like it's possible with video? I have looked around how to do this for a long time but haven't found any way. Please tell me if it's possible, and if not please consider implementing this feature!

Are you asking about using a particular codec? Or particular bit rate?

The latter does have a setting. Settings > Playback > under "Music Quality" you set "Internet quality" to your max desired bit rate.

If you are asking about using a particular codec, the official client and Finamp both only do AAC for on-the-fly transcodes. Symfonium will use vorbis.

Finamp can also do OPUS and MP3 for pre-transcoded offline downloads only.

Ideally I'd like to limit the bitrate on the server side. I have some files with large bitrates for the audio, and anything over like 2ch 96kbps AAC is a waste of internet data. I have only found a way to limit video bitrate server side, but not audio..
And also, the client side Internet quality setting doesn't work for some codecs like FLAC, it still sends the audio file directly.

There is no setting on the server side that is separate from video. Also, its been a while since I used the official app for remote listening. You are right regarding FLAC not transcoding.

Give Finamp a try. Make sure to sign up for the beta so you get the reworked version.

Ah okay, thanks anyways.

Symfonium will transcode FLAC or anything if the bitrate is more than the configured in the client.
If not there's a bug in the transcode decision engine Server and it should be reported.

I'm thinking there is a server side bug.  Neither Finamp nor Symfonium is transcoding FLAC when it should on server 10.10.3. I'll do a bit more testing and report the server bug.

I noticed I forgot to mention my audio files are within video files. Using flac as an audio codec for videos just sends out the flac file with the transcoded video.
