How to set up thumbnails correctly in folder view ? - phantomwise - 2025-01-02
Hi,
I have started making a library for video tutorials I want to save, but I can't figure out how to make thumbnails work properly with the folder view.
For example, I have an
Origami folder in the library. When I only put the videos in it like this :

(Plus the auto created nfo files)
Then I get one frame from the video as thumbnail, but it's a frame from somewhere in the middle which is pretty useless to me since I need thumbnails showing the finished result of the tutorial.
So I tried to see if I could manually add thumbnails. I removed everything except YouTube videos for testing purposes and downloaded the video thumbnails to see if I could add them to each videos.
When I put an image with the same name as each video like this :

Then ALL the videos get the pufferfish thumbnail, which is super weird... Am I missing something obvious ? How do I assign thumbnails for each videos without doing it manually with "Edit Images" then "Upload" for each video ?
I tried using the YouTubeMetadata plugin, but I haven't been able to make it work (I get no result when trying to identify a video with its YouTube ID) and it wouldn't be a great solution anyway since the tutos come from various sources, not only YouTube.
I also tried to embed the thumbnails directly in the video files with ffmpeg but it doesn't work for webm, so I would need to convert them first, which I would rather avoid for my mental health.
So I'd be really grateful for any tips on how to make the thumbnails show up properly. I couldn't find a section on the folder view in the documentation, did I miss it ?

What library type are these videos in? I believe that some behaviors are inherited from the library, even when in folder view.

Oh I didn't know the type mattered in folder view!
It was "mixed movies and shows", and I just tried with "home videos and photos" too but it's the same.
I still haven't managed to make it work, but I did find a few things I missed :
Very stupidly, I had forgotten to check the "Save artwork in media folders" option. So I did that, and it created thumbnails named "videoname-poster.jpg" (the thumbnails taken from somewhere in the middle of videos, which I don't want). I thought I could just delete them and replace them with the images I wanted, correctly named "videoname-poster.jpg" instead of "videoname.jpg" this time, but it didn't work. Once again all the videos have the same thumbnail (a different one this time, not the pufferfish). Even after scanning the folder again. And if I refresh all metadata including images, my images are overridden by the default thumbnail.

Update : thanks for the suggestion about changing the library type, after a new try it seems to work !
I the corrected filenames for the thumbnails in a "home videos and photos" library (with "-poster" at the end this time) and now it does work, every video has the correct associated thumbnail \o/
So I tried again with a new "mixed movies and shows" library, but it still doesn't work there, all the videos have the same thumbnail.

So not entirely solved but at least it's a usable workaround

While adding other files to the same library (home videos & photos type now) I noticed that, although the videos now always have the correct thumbnail, sometimes the thumbnail image is also displayed in the folder (in red in the screenshots) and sometimes it's not (in green). If I uncheck "Display the photos" in the library settings then none of them are shown, but when the option is checked I can't figure out why sometimes they are shown and sometimes not...
I can't find any common factor between the videos for which the thumbnail appear in the library that isn't also shared by the other videos.
- It's not file type : all the new videos are YouTube shorts in webm format (both those whose thumbnails are displayed and those who aren't), for now this hasn't happened with full videos (even though some were webm too).
- It's not special characters : some of the videos whose thumbnails are displayed in the library don't have any, and some of the videos whose thumbnail is not displayed have them.
So what makes some of the thumbnails show up in the library ?...
