I have a fire tv 4k stick Gen 1. I use to use mpv as external player for tv. This worked great and played everything nice which the official app sometimes wouldn't play due to error. Recently the app no longer seems to use HW and only plays with SW leading to a stuttered video.

I've tried just player recently and though it plays fine and remembers playback progress, it doesn't seem to find embedded dvdsub subtitles. I've tried vlc in the past but audio seems to always be out of sync with video and video playback progress never seems to save. MX player seems zoom and aspect ratio seems buggy, video always start off zoomed and aspect ratio changed. Nova player doesn't remember playback progress.

Anyone have any recommendations for another external player?

IMO… None. Android doesn’t have proper apis to support seamless handoff between apps so the experience will always be subpar.

i don't completely disagree with this however the experience on android with jellyfin can be improved quite a bit using kodi+jellyfin for kodi

on the latest alpha versions i am able to get TrueHD Atmos, EAC3 Atmos and DTS:X passthrough as well as dolby vision working

(though, the kodi experience outside of playback is something else entirely)
